Alternatives

A private, open-source alternative to the notes app you have outgrown

Koru is a free, open-source, native desktop workspace for notes and documents that keeps your work on your own devices. It works offline, syncs directly between your devices, and imports from Evernote, Notion and OneNote. Here is how it compares, and what is coming next.

Why people switch to Koru

Your notes live on your devices

Koru keeps your workspace on your own computer and works without an internet connection or an account. Devices sync with each other directly, so your notes do not have to pass through anyone’s cloud to stay in step.

A native desktop app

Koru is a native app written in Rust, not a website in a window. Your workspace opens straight from your own disk, with nothing to load from a server first.

Open source, so you can check

The Koru app is open source under the MPL-2.0 license. Anyone can read the code, build it and see exactly what it does with your notes. A notes app you rely on for years should not be a black box.

Free, and not a trial

Koru costs nothing, with no trial and no account. Koru Cloud, an optional paid sync service, is coming soon from $9.99 a month. You will not need it to keep using your notes.

AI on your terms

Connect the AI you already use, such as Claude, ChatGPT or a local model through Ollama, with Koru’s built-in MCP server. With a local model, your notes never leave your machine.

What is coming next

Koru runs on Windows today, with macOS in beta, iOS and Android apps in development and a Linux app on the roadmap. Tasks, collaboration, a web clipper, search inside images and scanned PDFs, and Koru Cloud are on the roadmap. Each comparison says plainly what is coming, so you know when Koru covers everything you need.
