Anytype alternative

Leaving Anytype? A local-first notes app you can move to today

Anytype says its current app keeps working, but moving to its next version, Anytwo, means a one-way migration. If you are moving anyway, Koru is a free, open-source, local-first notes app for Windows and Mac. Export your Anytype spaces as Markdown and import them into Koru. There is no Anytype importer yet.

Why people look for a Anytype alternative

Anytwo is a new app, and moving to it is one-way

In September 2026 Anytype announced Anytwo, a rebuild with a new database, editor and sync. Anytype says it gave up backwards compatibility to get there: to use the new build you commit to a "hard migration", and Anytype says it will build a bridge to make that as smooth as it can.

The first public release won't match Anytype feature for feature

Anytype plans a first public release by the end of 2026 and says it "will not have feature parity to Anytype in its first releases". Pricing for Anytwo hasn't been decided. Anytype says it will have self-hosting.

Anytype itself isn't going away

Anytype says you can keep using the current app "forever", that it will move to the MIT open-source license, and that development will slow while the team focuses on Anytwo. If Anytype works for you, staying is a real option. This page is for people who would rather migrate once, to something else.

The differences that matter

Plain documents, not a typed object graph

Koru is a document-first notes app: pages with headings, tables, checklists and code, nested pages and #tags. It doesn't try to copy Anytype's types, relations and sets. If your notes are mostly writing, that's less to manage.

A desktop app built for work at your computer

Koru is a native desktop app written in Rust for Windows and macOS. Next to your notes you can open terminal sessions as tabs, and on a Mac, coding agents such as Claude Code or Codex as tabs too. Koru's built-in MCP server lets AI tools work with your notes.

Local-first, no account

Your notes live in a local database on your computer. Koru opens and saves with no connection and nothing to sign in to. Koru syncs directly between devices you link with a QR code or a short code, peer to peer and end-to-end encrypted, built on iroh.

Open source today

Koru's app is open source under MPL-2.0. Anytype is source-available today, under the Any Source Available License 1.0, and has announced a move to MIT.

Where Anytype is ahead

Anytype has a mature object model: types, relations (properties), sets and collections, with views over them. It also has native iOS and Android apps, sharing and chat in spaces, peer-to-peer sync on local networks, self-hosting, and an import path from Notion, Obsidian and Evernote.

Koru has none of the types/relations/sets model and no phone app yet. If those are what you use every day, Anytype or Anytwo may suit you better.

Which one fits you

Koru is a good fit if

  • You mostly write documents and want a fast, local-first notes app on Windows or Mac.
  • You'd rather migrate once to a stable app than wait for Anytwo to reach feature parity.
  • You want an app that is open source today.
  • You want terminals, MCP and, on a Mac, coding agents next to your notes.

Anytype may suit you better, for now, if

  • You rely on types, relations, sets and collections to structure your data.
  • You need a phone app today.
  • You share spaces and chat with other people inside them.
  • You're happy with Anytype as it is. Anytype says it will keep working.

Moving from Anytype to Koru

Koru has no Anytype importer today. Anytype exports your space as Markdown on desktop, and Koru imports Markdown, offline.

  1. In Anytype on desktop, open your Channel Settings, choose Export and pick Markdown. Turn on "Include files" and "Include linked Objects". You can also export a single object or a view.
  2. If you exported a zip, unzip it.
  3. In Koru, click the + beside the tabs, then Import…, then Markdown, and pick the files, or drag them into the Koru window.

What comes across

  • Headings, paragraphs, quotes, lists, tasks, code blocks, tables and dividers
  • Links and common formatting
  • Images that sit next to the exported files
  • One Koru document per Anytype object, titled from its first heading or file name

What to know first

  • Types, relations, sets and collections don't carry over as such. Any front matter is kept as a block at the top of the note.
  • Links between objects arrive as ordinary links, not links between Koru documents.
  • Markdown import takes files, not a whole folder at once.
  • Anytype doesn't export chats, discussions or space members, and export only works in its desktop app.
