Notion AI credits explained: how they work, and when they reset

By Steven Liechti, founder of Koru · Published

Short answer

Notion AI credits are monthly allowances on Business and Enterprise seats: 1,500 Standard credits for work where Notion's Auto router picks the model, and 500 Select credits for work where you pick a model or run your own Custom Agents. Both reset monthly, at the start of your billing cycle, and don't roll over.

Notion introduced this credit system on October 19, 2026. New Business and Enterprise workspaces use it from that day, and existing workspaces move over on November 2, 2026 (Notion's announcement). If you want the news side, what changed and what to do before November 2, read Notion pricing changes in 2026. This post is the mechanics.

Everything here comes from Notion's help center and announcement, linked as I go. I build a local-first notes app, Koru, and I'll come to that at the end.

What are Notion AI credits?

There are three kinds, and the names are easy to mix up (Manage your AI credits):

CreditsWhat they're forHow manyIf they run out
StandardWork where Notion picks the model (Auto)1,500 per member a month, no rolloverYour admin can let you continue on Notion credits
SelectWork where you pick a model yourself, or a Custom Agent you set up for your own use500 per member a month, no rolloverYour admin can let you continue on Notion credits
Notion creditsUsage beyond Standard or Select, high credit consumption models, and Custom Agents funded by the workspaceBought by an admin for the whole workspaceAdmins can buy more or change how they're allocated
Notion says the included amounts may vary with your plan and purchase arrangement.

Standard and Select come with your seat. Notion says they aren't cash or a cash balance, and you can't combine them, swap one kind for the other, or move them to another member.

Which Notion features use which credits?

From Notion's eligible features list:

  • Standard credits: Notion Agent on Auto (including chat), writing and translation, AI blocks, AI database formulas and inline editing, and AI Meeting Notes from December 1, 2026.
  • Select credits: Notion Agent when you pick the model yourself, and Custom Agents.
  • Notion credits only: high credit consumption models (Notion names Fable and Astra as examples), Custom Agents funded by the workspace, and running an agent through the Notion API or a connected app.
  • No credits: Workers while in beta, and, for now, database Autofill. Everyday reads and writes through Notion MCP and the Notion API don't use credits either, though rate limits still apply.

How many credits does a Notion AI task use?

It depends on the task and its context. Notion publishes its own estimates, comparing Auto with picking a top model yourself:

TaskNotion's examplesOn AutoOn Opus 5.5
SimplePolish an email, translate a message, draft a support replyAbout 5 creditsAbout 50 credits
MediumWrite a work report, find a document, summarize a one-hour meetingAbout 10 creditsAbout 85 credits
ComplexDraft a performance review, refine a strategy document, create and configure databasesAbout 25 creditsAbout 150 credits
Notion's estimates, from "Manage your AI credits". Notion says actual use varies.

On those estimates, 1,500 Standard credits is roughly 150 medium tasks a month on Auto, and 500 Select credits is roughly six medium tasks on a top model you pick. That arithmetic is mine, from Notion's figures, not a Notion number. Notion says Auto can make credits go up to 10 times further than picking a top model.

Do Notion AI credits reset?

Yes. Standard and Select credits each reset monthly, at the start of your billing cycle, and unused credits don't roll over. Each person sees their reset date in Settings › Notion AI › Usage.

Notion credits work differently (What are Notion credits?). Monthly Notion credits reset to the amount you bought each month, with no carry-over. Annual Notion credits can be used at any point in your subscription year, then expire at renewal, again with no carry-over.

What happens when you run out of Notion AI credits?

The features that use that kind of credit pause until your next reset. Because Standard and Select are separate, the other kind keeps working:

  • Out of Standard: Standard features pause. Leftover Select credits won't cover them.
  • Out of Select: Select features pause. If you still have Standard credits, switch Notion Agent back to Auto.
  • Out of both: you can continue on Notion credits if your admin allows it and the workspace has some.

Continuing on Notion credits is off by default. An admin turns it on with Allow workspace to use Notion credits after AI limit is reached in Settings › Notion AI. Notion warns you in Notion Agent chat as you get close, and you can ask an admin for more right from that alert.

How much do extra Notion credits cost?

Notion credits are an add-on for Business and Enterprise, bought for the whole workspace. If you manage billing in Notion:

  • Monthly credits: $10 per 1,000 credits, billed with your monthly subscription. You can buy more mid-cycle, and raise or lower the amount each month.
  • Annual credits: $13 per 1,000 credits, paid upfront, for annual plans only. Notion says they cost more because you can use them any time in the year.

Teams with an account team can also buy on-demand credits. If a credit payment fails, Notion says your plan keeps working, along with the credits you've already paid for.

How do Custom Agents use Notion AI credits?

A Custom Agent uses its owner's Select credits by default, even when you share it with your team (How AI credits work for Custom Agents). When the owner's Select credits run out, it moves to any extra credits the admin has given them, and then to the workspace's Notion credits, if the admin allows it.

An admin can instead fund an agent with a monthly budget of Notion credits and set spending controls for it. If one person owns the agents a whole team relies on, that's worth sorting out before their 500 Select credits run out.

How do I check my Notion AI credit usage?

  • Members: Settings › Notion AI › Usage shows what you've used, what's left and when it resets.
  • Admins: Settings › Access & billing › Notion credits opens the Notion credits dashboard, with real-time usage, estimated usage to your next service date, per-agent runs, and members using credits past their allowance (credits dashboard).

You can also use AI you already pay for: Notion says you can connect a ChatGPT Plus, Pro or Go account and use it in your personal Notion Agent instead of your Standard and Select credits. It doesn't work in Custom Agents yet.

Do your notes need a credit meter at all?

Credits meter Notion's AI, not your pages, and for a team that lives in Notion the new system may be fine. But if what you mostly keep in Notion is your own notes, it's fair to ask whether they need to sit in a metered cloud workspace.

That's the case for a local-first app. Koru, which I build, is a free, open-source (MPL-2.0) desktop workspace for notes, docs and files, for Windows and macOS. Your notes stay on your device, it works offline with no account, and it doesn't ship its own AI, so there's nothing to meter. It imports a Notion Markdown & CSV export on your computer. See Koru as a Notion alternative for an honest comparison, including what Koru doesn't do yet.

Frequently asked questions

How do Notion AI credits work?

Each Business and Enterprise member gets 1,500 Standard credits a month for work where Notion's Auto picks the model, and 500 Select credits for work where you pick a model or run your own Custom Agents. Admins can buy shared Notion credits for anything beyond that.

Do Notion AI credits reset?

Yes. Standard and Select credits reset monthly at the start of your billing cycle, and unused credits don't roll over. Monthly Notion credits also reset each month; annual Notion credits expire when your subscription renews.
